Child fell from tall building because of the absence of grilles and the little girl climbed up
In view of a home accident recently that a child fell from tall building because of the absence of grilles and the little girl climbed up. This is really sad. HKDIC would like to suggest everyone to aware of home safety, and to appoint registered minor work contractors to install grilles in order to avoid home accidents.
Notes：
  1. All windows at home should have grilles installed and be locked (especially for home with kids), including any kind of windows. Simple works can already avoid serious accidents.
  2. To avoid children home accident, should not leave children stay at home alone. An accident would happen in just a minute.
  3. To avoid children home accident, it is important to do prevention. For example, adding fence along bed sides and put children in safe area, and keep the children in your sight area.
  4. Avoid putting stuffs near windows to avoid children climbing up.
  5. To appoint registered building professionals or minor work contractors which registered at the Building Department to do the construction. “Minor Works Control System” is implemented since 31 December 2010. According to the Building (Minor Works) Regulation, if the owner needs to do the 126 minor works under the Minor Works Control System.
  6. If the owner appoints non-registered minor work contractor to do the 126 minor works which are under Minor Works Control System, he/she may bear legal responsibility. Also, if accidents happen during the work, the owner may be held legal liable and bear all compensation. Therefore appointing registered minor work contractor is the best choice.
  7. Relatively, it is even better to choose contractors with ISO certification. Their constructors are all well-trained as the ISO standard. Those contractors such as HKDIC also provide professional training and guidelines to staffs and constructors to ensure employees’ safety.
Design Information Centre has registered as Minor Works license under “Smart Will Engineering Limited” (Buildings Department Registration Number: MWC(P) 360/2011) to conduct related works.
