Disappointed customers: Renovation ends in failure

Minor Works Control System has been fully in effect since 31 December in 2010. According to the Building ( Minor Works) Regulation, If owners hire unregistered contractors to perform the 126 items of building works included in Minor Works Control System, owners may incur liability. Besides, owners may also be charged and bear any possible damages if any accidents arise. It is never worth doing so and hence choosing a registered contractor would just be your best choice.
Many readers complained that after paying for renovation, the construction ended in failure, the furniture did not match and resulted in seeking the police and Consumer Council for assistance. Consumer Council reported that from 2008 to 2011 January, they received over 1,042 similar complaints about selling method, fail to deliver, unreasonable add-on fees, product safety, after-sales service, maintenance, etc.
- Consumers should research and compare different interior design companies before renovation and choose one that has good management and mindset. For example, training for employees, experienced designers and the quality of service team.
- Property owners should request measurement services, supervise to prevent any mistakes and notify workers about their wishes.
- Consumers should not easily agree to quotations and oral agreement. If the company goes out of business or raises their price unreasonably, the customer will have no choice but to continue with it. Therefore, for prevention, customer should request quotations from contractors first and list in detail about the terms and conditions of the renovation. Remember to agree on the price before paying and signing the contract.
- If the product is not the same as the one in the showroom, notify the company immediately, request return and insist to pay the last portion of the fee after it has been changed, returned and sent back. If the company rejects, consider paying only a portion of the fee to prevent the company from declining responsibility.
- If there is a delay with delivery even if the customer rushed it, you can go to court and claim compensation. According to Supply of Services (Implied Terms) Ordinance (Cap. 457), even if there is no specific service date or time on the contract, the company must provide that service in a reasonable period of time.
- After the renovation is done, a good company should provide free warranty for the client. If the damage is not made by humans then the company gladly repair.
