Consumer received more than a thousand complaints on furniture

This year, the Consumer Council, has already received more than a thousand furniture-related complaints in the first ten months, an increase of thirty percent compared to previous year. This includes around a hundred complaints on a specific furniture business which went out of business last month. They may have violated “The Trade Description Ordinance” by not providing services after payment.

JMSOFT, a furniture business with seven shops suddenly went out of business last month. The Consumer council has stated they continuously received complaints about that business since September and in total they have a hundred and seventy nine complaints. The complaints include not receiving any product after payment and may have violated “The Trade Description Ordinance”.

Including complaints about JMSOFT, Consumer council has received over a thousand complaints in the first ten months of this year.

Mr. Kong, who assigned the company to custom make furniture, paid one thousand dollars as deposit, after the company went to his house for measurements and promised they will provide him with a digital design plan and then build the furniture. A few days later, Mr. Kong wants to see the design plans but the company states that the plan requires time and just provide him with a hundred thousand dollar invoice and request him to pay the fifty thousand dollar deposit by promising him that they will complete the design plans within a few days.

However, in the end all Mr. Kong received was a hand drawn plan that was faxed to him. As he was unsatisfied, he requested the company to provide him with a detailed design plan with measurements, but he never received it. As he paid the fifty thousand dollar deposit, he further requested the company to promise that they will build same price furniture and cancel all transactions, but the company declined his requests. After filing a complaint to the Consumer Council, the company agreed to cancel the original transaction but will require three thousand dollar for paperwork fee.

Consumer Council reminds that when paying, be sure to check and confirm with all the terms and conditions on the invoice and retain a copy.

Points of Caution：
  1. Civilians are reminded to do more research when searching for an interior design company.
  2. Select from businesses with reputable quality. Refrain from selecting companies with bad reputation.
  3. Pay a portion of the deposit and pay the rest after checking the furniture when they have arrived.
  4. Purchase services from an interior design and construction company with good reputation. There are some companies which may have many branches, but in reality they may not be that good. Therefore, before concluding which company to go with, research and acknowledge their reputation and work quality first.
  5. If there is any furniture mismatch, you must question the company. You can retain records by capturing photos and this will protect individual benefit.
  6. Before signing any contract, acknowledge all terms and conditions first.
  7. If you are unsure about the company, be sure to clarify everything first to prevent any future disputes.
  8. Must request the company to provide the product’s information like material, date of receiving, responsibility, etc.
  9. Communicate more with the company to lower the chances of running into problems.
  10. If the company goes out of business, be sure to retain all invoices and immediately contact the police.
