Common Child Household Accidents

A 18 months old female infant tipped over a table and a bottle of hot water burned her right front arm. She was taken to the hospital.

Points to be taken into consideration:

  1. The most common child household accidents are hitting onto materials, caught between doors, falling off the bed, bathroom slips, falling out of a chair and clamped by cabinets.
  2. Parents must be aware at all times and make sure there has enough safety prevention; do not casually place dangerous materials like thinner, medicine, hot water, cutlery.
  3. Ensure that enough safety prevention is done to prevent household accidents like putting baby gates to prevent the baby from falling off the stairs and going into the kitchen.
  4. On table and cabinet corners, make sure to install protection or select furniture with round corners.
  5. Never let a infant/child be alone at home and do not rely on elder children to be responsible of taking care of younger siblings cause they might not be able to handle immediate situations.
  6. Refrain from using table cloths because a lot of accidents result from children pulling onto the table cloth and materials falling onto the child.
  7. A plug should be placed in door cracks to minimize the percentage of bumping and clamping.
  8. There should be a cage surrounding the bed, safety belt for chairs, window shields and locking for windows in order to prevent any serious accidents from happening.
