39-year-old Air Conditioning Worker Falls from Pok Fu Lam Construction Site and Passes Away After One Day of Hospitalization

On June 10, 2023, a 39-year-old man surnamed Chen, who worked as an air conditioning worker, fell from a high place at a residential construction site located at 86 Pok Fu Lam Road in the Western District. After the accident, he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and was hospitalized in the intensive care unit. Unfortunately, he passed away after one day of treatment. It is understood that the victim had parents, a spouse and a son around the age of 14 who had just obtained Hong Kong Identity Card.

 

According to preliminary investigations by the police, they believe that the male worker accidentally fell while working on air conditioning installation at the site, and the case has been classified as an industrial accident.

 

Design Information Centre would like to remind everyone the following items, to pay attention to the importance of occupational safety and avoid fatal accidents.

  1. Before choosing a renovation company, one should realize the structure and ability of a company, for example if the company provides regular staff training, the resume and the strength of designers and how professional are the renovation workers, and employ a large-scaled, well known and experienced company. Also, companies should be accredited the ISO International Certification, and have to be strictly examined by banks which offering interest-free instalment will be preferable and more reliable.
  2. Where any work is in progress, all workers and mentors have to comply with the regulations strictly so as to protect the safety and interest of any parties.
  3. Before choosing a renovation company, be aware if that company purchased labor insurance.
  4. When working in a high place, the workers must wear the seat belt and link it to unmovable place to ensure the safety.
  5. The renovation company must conduct a risk evaluation.

If owners hire unregistered constructors to perform the 126 items of building works included in Minor Works Control System, even owners purchased related insurance before the project begin, Insurance may consider that owner may be charged and bear any possible accident arise. Incurring greater loss, hence choosing a registered contractor would just be your best choice.

Design Information Centre has been registered as a minor works contractor ‘Smart Will Engineering Limited’ (Buildings Department registration no.: MWC 4320/2011) to carry out related construction and minor works. To avoid misunderstandings or conflicts between different parties, remember to inquire clearly before fitting out.
