A 7-foot-long bamboo branch falls from heights, almost causing a fatal accident

Today(2022-10-22), in the afternoon, there was an accident of falling objects from heights on Nelson Street, Mong Kok. A 4-year-old boy was hit on the shoulder by a bamboo branch that fell from upstairs when he was passing through the street opposite the Far East Bank Mongkok Building. The injured boy was taken to Kwong Wah Hospital, while a man surnamed Yang (43 years old) was arrested on suspicion of "allowing an object to fall from a building". After a preliminary investigation, it was suspected that the bamboo branches fell from the bamboo branches when the workers were working on the scaffolding of the building, causing the accident.
Design Information Centre would like to remind everyone the following items, to pay attention to the importance of occupational safety and avoid fatal accidents.
- Before choosing a renovation company, one should realize the structure and ability of a company, for example if the company provides regular staff training, the resume and the strength of designers and how professional are the renovation workers, and employ a large-scaled, well known and experienced company. Also, companies should be accredited the ISO International Certifcation, and have to be strictly examined by banks which offering interest-free instalment will be preferable and more reliable.
- Don’t choose discreditable companies because of low prices to avoid unnecessary loss.
- When choosing a fitting out company, pay attention to the management culture of the company, and if the company provides various trainings to its frontline and backend support staff regularly.
- Where any work is in progress, every workers and mentors have to comply with the regulations strictly so as to protect the safety and interest of any parties.
- Before choosing a renovation company, be aware if that company purchased labor insurance.
- The renovation company must conduct a risk evaluation.
