Safety Rope Breaks at Bamboo Scaffolding, 1 Killed
A man fell from Man Chik Building, 42-52, Woosung Street, Yau Ma Tei at 10:59 a.m., May 7, and was unconscious on the ground. Paramedics sped to the scene and rushed the man to the hospital, where he was declared dead. The site above was reportedly in the process of erecting a bamboo scaffold. It is suspected that the scaffolder's safety rope broke during work, leading to his fall. His workmates found out and called the police. The Labour Department said personnel was dispatched to the scene immediately upon receipt of the report, and investigations are now underway on the cause of the accident.

Design Information Centre would like to remind everyone the following items, to pay attention to the importance of occupational safety and avoid fatal accidents.
  1. Before choosing a renovation company, one should realize the structure and ability of a company, for example if the company provides regular staff training, the resume and the strength of designers and how professional are the renovation workers, and employ a large-scaled, well known and experienced company. Also, companies should be accredited the ISO International Certifcation, and have to be strictly examined by banks which offering interest-free instalment will be preferable and more reliable.
  2. Don’t choose discreditable companies because of low prices to avoid unnecessary loss.
  3. When choosing a fitting out company, pay attention to the management culture of the company, and if the company provides various trainings to its frontline and backend support staff regularly.
  4. Where any work is in progress, every workers and mentors have to comply with the regulations strictly so as to protect the safety and interest of any parties.
  5. Before choosing a renovation company, be aware if that company purchased labor insurance.
  6. The renovation company must conduct a risk evaluation.
If owners hire unregistered constructors to perform the 126 items of building works included in Minor Works Control System, even owners purchased related insurance before the prjoect begin, Insurance may consider that owner may be charged and bear any possible accident arise. Incurring greater loss, hence choosing a registered contractor would just be your best choice.

Design Information Centre has been registered as a minor works contractor ‘Smart Will Engineering Limited’ (Buildings Department registration no.: MWC 4320/2011) to carry out related construction and minor works. To avoid misunderstandings or conflicts between different parties, remember to inquire clearly before fitting out.
