Recently, a netozen whined on a Facebook group, saying that she ordered a wood cabinet on Taobao, and delivered to Hong Kong through consolidated consignment after paying more than HKD 400. She pointed out that the cabinet was wrapped with cardboard and Styrofoam when it was put into the warehouse, but the package was seriously damaged and the wood cabinet was broken, she was shocked. She reflected to the consolidator, but the company insisted that the accident was the fault of the seller and refused to compensate.

The post caused heated discussion among netizens, a netizen who claimed he was working in transportation industry inferred that the problem was caused by improper goods storage, the goods was not well protected for outdoor storage, it was suspected that it was put outdoors instead of the warehouse, it was stored improperly. Besides, a netizen reminded the victim zealously that if she ordered furniture through Taobao, she must ask the seller to add anti‑collision wood frame.

As a smart consumer, how to avoid the above problem faced by the victim?
  1. Choose a reputated, experienced and professional company when purchasing or ordering furniture:
    i) Pay attention to whether the company has a strictly managed construction team and professional transportation service, to ensure its staff are professional, and will supervise the whole process from furniture making to transportation to the customer’s home, to avoid accident.
    ii) Pay attention to whether the company has comprehensive indemnity system, state the indemnity terms in black and white.
  2. Research the company’s background when choosing a furniture making company, aeputated and experienced company normally has international recognitions of related industry, such as Quality management system ISO 9001:2015, Enviromental Management system ISO 14001:2015 and Occupational Health and Safety Management System OHSAS 18001:2007, etc., to ensure the quality of products.
  3. There’re numerous online shopping platforms nowadays, price and service quality should be carefully considered when choosing services, avoid patronizing online shops without clear backrounds because of lower price. It is worrying that the companies are lack of comprehensive indemnity systems and irresponsible to consumers, causing loss to helpless consumers.
