“Fatal Accident” A construction worker was killed as towel wrapped around his neck got caught in grinding machine in Sha Tin, his daughter used the Global Positioning System (GPS) to trace and expose the tragedy
A rare fatal industrial accident happened in Sha Tin. A 75-year-old construction worker was suspected to be killed after the towel he wrapped around his neck was caught in a grinding machine while working at Fung Shing Court in Sha Tin. After finding out that the victim had been late back home, his daughter was worried and used the Global Positioning System (GPS) of her smartphone to trace her father to the location, exposing the tragedy.

The police received a report at 1 a.m. and went to a flat at Wah Shing House, found that the 75-year-old construction worker died on the spot. After initial investigation, it is believed that during the renovation works on the site, the victim was strangled by a towel accidentally. The victim wrapped a on his neck, it was suspected that he was suffocated to death after a towel he wrapped around his neck was accidentally caught in a grinding machine, because he worked alone in the flat, no one knew he was dead. The case has been classified as an industrial accident.

  1. Where any work is in progress, every workers and mentors have to comply with the regulations strictly so as to protect the safety and interest of any parties.
  2. Before choosing a renovation company, be aware if that company purchased labor insurance.
  3. The renovation company must conduct a risk evaluation.
  4. Before choosing a renovation company, one should realize the structure and ability of a company, for example if the company provides regular staff training, the resume and the strength of designers and how professional are the renovation workers, and employ a large-scaled, well known and experienced company. Also, companies should be accredited the ISO International Certifcation, and have to be strictly examined by banks which offering interest-free instalment will be preferable and more reliable.
  5. If owners hire unregistered constructors to perform the 126 items of building works included in Minor Works Control System, even owners purchased related insurance before the prjoect begin, Insurance may consider that owner may be charged and bear any possible accident arise. Incurring greater loss, hence choosing a registered contractor would just be your best choice.
The Design Information Center has already been registered as “Smart Will Engineering Limited”（Building Department Registration Number: MWC 4320/2011）, which is a contractor for the small-scale construction project.
