An aluminum window shaken by Typhoon nearly fell down to cause an accident
Tropical Cyclone Lionrock lashed Hong Kong, bringing heavy rain and squalls to many Hong Kong districts. On 9th October 2021, the police received a report at 7:30a.m. that an aluminum window of a flat in Yuk Wah Crescent, Tsz Wan Shan was suspected to be shaken by the strong wind and was loosen. Fortunately the owner noted timely and held the loosen window. After that, the police officers arrived to provide assistance and took the window back indoors, no accidents were caused. When typhoons arrive, accidents of aluminum windows may occur and cause human injuries or death. Hence, owners should choose high quality aluminum windows with regular maintenance to protect the safety of oneselves and the others.

There's a lot to learn to choose a good quality aluminum window. When choosing aluminum windows, owners should consider the materials and structure, and pay attention to the precautions of installations. Firstly, owners should pay attention to the quality of aluminum, glass and metal parts of the aluminum windows, if they can bear the wind and high pressure brought by typhoons, so as to prevent the glass from shattering when typhoons lash. Secondly, owners should pay attention to the structural designs of the windows, for example, if the window is completely shut when it is closed, so as to prevent leakage. Thirdly, after installations of windows, owners should check the smoothness and closure of the windows by opening and closing them to make sure that they are properly installed. An improper installation can cause a series of problems. Most importantly owners must carry out regular checks and maintenance on the aluminum windows to ensure the normal operation and function of the windows.

Design Information Centre would like to remind everyone to pay attention to the following precautions about aluminum windows installations:
  1. If the following problems are found, qualified persons should be hired for checks and maintenance promptly :
    - Opening the window is hindered
    - Loosen window hinges
    - Broken screws or rivets
    - The aluminum frames which fix the glass are loosen
    - Deformed or unstable window frames or sashes
    - Water leakage is frequently found at the gap between the window frame and sash
    - Broken glass
    - The lock handle of the window sash can't be normally operated
  2. Learn about the structure and strength of the fitting out company before choosing it, for example, if the company has related ISO International Certifications, or if the company provides regular trainings to its employees, the experience and specialty of a designer and the professionalism of the fitting out workers can also be the reference. Besides, normally, the company with related International Certications has to work according to the ISO standards, and provide professional trainings to the fitting out workers.
  3. Choose a fitting out company which provides after-sales warranty. Design Information Centre has an independent team responsible for the 3-year structural warranty for residential projects and 1-year structural warranty for commercial projects.
  4. Don't choose discreditable companies because of low prices to avoid unnecessary losts.
  5. When choosing a fitting out company, pay attention to the management culture of the company, and if the company provides various trainings to its frontline and backend support staff regularly.
  6. If defects are found, you must request compensation from the company, you can take photos for the compensation later to protect your own rights.
  7. If you have specific requests on the design, fitting out or construction materials, those requests should be included in the contract clearly.
  8. Understand the contract terms and performance pledges before construction, enter into a clear and definite agreement, including the construction items and total expenditure, list out the payment method and process, and sign to confirm by mutual consent.
  9. During the fitting out, additional items should commence upon an agreement of additional items is signed by mutual consent, contents and prices are agreed by both parties.
  10. It is safer to choose companies which provide interest-free installment, because these companies have passed strict examinations of banks, including the financial status, normally these companies are more reliable. The agreement signed by both parties should include the payment method of the fitting out fee, such as the payment schedule, monthly payment date and payment amount per period, etc.
Design Information Centre has been registered as a minor works contractor ‘Smart Will Engineering Limited’ (Buildings Department registration no.: MWC 4320/2011) to carry out related construction and minor works. To avoid misunderstandings or conflicts between different parties, remember to inquire clearly before fitting out.
