Workplace tragedy: A male worker suspectedly slipped and fell during steel bracket installation in Tuen Mun, and was certified dead at the scene

At about 1 p.m. on 17 Sep 2021, Cheung, a 44-year-old male worker, fell from height during the exterior wall works of a building in Hanford Garden, Tuen Mun. Cheung fell into coma on the ground, a security guard called the police for help immediately, the police and medics arrived at the scene and confirmed the death of the victim on the spot. The cause of the accident is under investigation. The victim at that time was carrying out construction work on the exterior wall outside a flat located on the middle-level, he was installing a truss-out bamboo scaffold, he slipped and fell during the installation unfortunately. The Labour Department is investigating a fatal workplace incident in Tuen Mun now, staff had been deployed to the scene upon receiving the report and is now looking into the cause of the incident.
Design Information Centre would like to remind everyone the following items, to pay attention to the importance of occupational safety and avoid fatal accidents.
- During any construction works, workers should strictly follow the site regulations to protect the safety and interests of all parties.
- When choosing fitting out companies, pay attention to whether the companies will purchase labour insurance for their construction workers.
- When working at height, construction workers should wear full-body safety harnesses, and tie them to suitable anchorage points securely. Ladders should not be used for works outsides to avoid dangers.
- Before the commencement of construction, workers of fitting out companies must evaluate risks.
- Learn about the structure and strength of the fitting out company before choosing it, for example, if the company provides regular trainings to its employees, the experience and specialty of a designer and the professionalism of the fitting out workers, etc., patronize a large-scale, well-known and experienced company. The fitting out company which is internationally recognized, such as having ISO International Certifications, and provides interest-free installment supported by banks is more reliable.
- If owners uncarefully recruited non-registered contractors to carry out the 126 fitting out works specified in Minor Works Control System of the Building Department, although the owners might have purchased related insurance before the commencement of the construction, insurance companies might not offer compensation considering that the owners might violate the law, owners may be liable to the legal responsibility and compensation, do not be penny wise and pound foolish. Choosing a registered minor works contractor is your best choice.
