Three people have near-miss in the rooftop collapse accident
Previously, the rooftop canopy and balcony at the third floor of a village house in Tung Lo Wan Village, Sha Tin/Tai Wai, suddenly fell down, part of the concrete at the exterior wall was ramshackle. When the accident occurred, the 70-year-old couple owners were hanging out with their granddaughter, the concrete fell down at 8 meters from them, three of them were shocked that it was a brush with death, they were not injured fortunately. The officers of Fire Services Department and Buildings Department arrived after the accident, 9 households nearby had to be evacuated.

A 70-year-old couple live in the flat, they bought the third floor and the rooftop for self-occupancy 30 years ago, their son and daughter moved out after marriages, yesterday, the couple looked after their 4-year-old granddaughter for their son. Before the accident, 3 of them took a walk outside. Yu remembered when the accident occurred, he saw the concrete fell, creating a loud sound, then he saw the canopy of the rooftop fell down.

Design Information Centre would like to remind everyone:
  1. When walking at the side of a building, choose to walk under a covered path, to avoid being injured by falling objects.
  2. If renovation or maintenance is needed, choose contractors registered in Buildings Department for carrying out minor works to ensure safety.
  3. Understand the structure and strength of the company before making decision, for example, will the company provide regular trainings to employees, the experiences and skills of designers, the professionalism of the construction workers, choose large, reputable and experienced companies. The fitting out companies with ISO certifications and supported by banks to provide free installment service are more reliable.
  4. A lot of old buildings in Hong Kong are facing risks of lacking maintenance. Hence, management company and owners' corporations should pay more attention to the buildings to avoid accidents.
  5. Recruit legal and professional buildings professionals or registered contractors in Buildings Department for carrying out minor works, Minor Works Control System has been fully implemented since 31st December, 2010. According to ‘Building (Minor Works) Regulation’, if owners need to carry out the regulated 126 minor works in Minor Works Control System.
Design Information Centre has been registered as a minor works contractor ‘Smart Will Engineering Limited’ (Buildings Department registration no.: MWC 4320/2011) to carry out related construction and minor works. All our plasterer, painters, electricians and carpenters have legal licenses recognized by the government, customers can be reassured.
