A Tsuen Wan Store Earns $70,000/month, Got Chickened Out Opening Up a Branch and Lost $600,000

The victim is Boss Lau the Patty who planned to open a new fried-dish branch in Tai Wai and paid HK$ 600,000 by cash for his renovation, but the workers left without finishing the project, leading to a tight capital and a great loss.
This renovation project not only makes Boss Lau lose his money but also delays his plan to open a new branch. His personal dedication to private cuisine impresses us, but the shop owners must be aware of such renovation frauds.
Design Information Centre (DIC) warmly reminds everybody to pay attention to the followings :
- It is advised to consult with trusted companies and it is must to know well the corporate strengths and the scale prior to choosing any company. Normally, the famous and experienced companies receive international certifications in the related business, ex. ISO 9001:2008 the quality management system, ISO 14001:2004 the environment management system and OHSAS 18001:2007 the occupational health and safety assessment series.
- It is necessary to know the specifications of the contract rules and commitment of services prior to any construction, make a precise and clear agreement as far as possible, make sure each title and total expense of the project, mark the method of payment and procedures specifically, and sign the agreement upon reciprocal consent.
- It is advised to request the company list each outgoing title prior to renovation and any overrun title shall be reported prior to construction. Do avoid choosing the low offer since the hidden grey zone will generate considerable overrun budgets.
- In the event of finding any inconformity and in need of claiming the item from the company, it is advised to take pictures with backup to claim it afterward for protecting your personal interests.
- It is advised to choose the companies offering payables in interest-free installments since the companies making such option available to customers have to pass the strict review of the banks including the corporate financial status, so such companies are relatively reliable. The agreement signed by both parties shall mark how the payable of the renovation expense is paid, e.g. number of periods, monthly payment date and amount of each payment.
