Nightmares of Renovation Traps

Recently there was a feature article that the media has interviewed some citizens who had had unhappy renovation experiences. District Councils and Consumer Council have been receiving complaints frequently, not only the affected citizens’ dreams of living a happy life broken, some of them even had nightmares. 3 of the citizens who had fallen into renovation traps shared their experiences, including electricity and water leakages, even chased by debt collection companies innocently.

Design Information Centre (DIC) warmly reminds everybody to pay attention to the followings, to avoid falling into “renovation traps”:
  1. Understand the structures and capabilities of renovation companies before choosing, for example, if the company has related ISO international certification, if the company has regular training for staff, designers’ experiences and abilities, construction workers’ professional levels etc. in addition, companies who have related ISO international certification have to follow ISO standard, and provide construction workers professional trainings.
  2. Ask for clear service information before signing contracts, such as materials and delivery date etc. Understand contract details and service commitment etc. before construction, conclude a clear agreement, make sure of the construction items and total expenditure, list out payment methods and procedures, both parties shall sign under mutual consent. Before construction, it is suggested to ask the company to list out all expenditure items, quote the price before construction, do not choose companies just because of the low quotation price, many hidden grey areas can cause you shocking extra costs.
  3. If you find that there are any differences during construction, you can take photos first for reference, as evidence for later recovery, preserving personal interest.
  4. It is more reliable to choose companies which provide interest-free installment, because those companies have to go through banks’ strict approvals, and their financial statement have to be checked regularly, so this kind of companies are more reliable. The agreement signed by both parties better lists out the renovation payment methods, such as payment period, monthly payment date and payment amount each period etc. In order to avoid later misunderstandings and conflicts, remember to ask clearly before construction!
The Design Information Center has already been registered as “Smart Will Engineering Limited”（Building Department Registration Number: MWC 4320/2011）, which is a contractor for the small-scale construction project.
