Contract worker from the Housing Department accidently dropped tools during renovation

Contractors from the Housing Department have been working on the renovation project in various public estates. During the renovation, the contract worker accidentally dropped his electric tool and hit a male pedestrian with an umbrella in his hand. This accident may be caused by slippery hands. The male pedestrian was discharged from the hospital after treatment. The police have arrested the relevant worker. A district councilor said that this kind of accident has taken place before, and it is necessary for Housing Department to improve the management of contract workers.
In order to prevent unnecessary spending in these kind of accidents, we must be aware of the following reminders from Design Information Center. Accidents may occur no matter it is a billion dollar project or normal family decoration project.
- Please choose a company with good reputation. A company with multiple ISO certifications will be the best option as their workers received professional training and required to work according to the ISO standards.
- If the proprietor hired a company without registration to execute 126 decoration works of “Minor Works Control System” regulated by Buildings Department, the insurance company may not provide relevant compensations even if proprietor purchased corresponding insurances before the commencement of the renovation project. Proprietor may be responsible for the relevant legal responsibilities and compensations. Do not be penny wise and pound foolish. Please pay attention and hire a registered Minor Works Contractors.
- It is necessary to understand the company structure and its past performance before choosing any renovation company. There are few things you need to look for, such as whether the company provides regular training, the experience of the designers and the skills of their technician. It is always recommended to choose a company with a good market share, good market reputation and history in the renovation industry. A company with ISO certifications or provide interest-free installment service serves as additional proof.
- Make sure all the terms and conditions are clearly stated in the contract. The contract should include the renovation items, material used and the renovation duration. If there is any amendments during the renovation project, additional agreement should be signed between both parties to make sure the details of the renovation project is clear.
- The “Minor Works Control System” has been implemented on 31st Dec, 2010. Proprietor should hire qualified and professional specialist or registered Minor Works Contractors of the Building Department to carry out any renovation project. “Building (Minor Works) Regulation” provides the relevant regulations if a proprietor needs to implement 126 “Minor works” regulated in “Minor Works Control System”.
For preventing misunderstandings or disputes in the future, please have a thorough consultation with the contractor before the commencement of any renovation project.
