A interior design & renovation company suspected with “false trade descriptions of services”, violated (The coverage of the Trade descriptions Ordinance), 3 people were under arrested.
Recently, The Customs and Excise Department received complains from public, while a renovation company offering a renovation services, the company has self-added construction and additional fee without agreement with consumer, the renovation fee was cost a hundred seventy thousand but then raised up to seven hundred and nine thousand for a original 800 square feet’s unit, which suspected violated to ( The coverage of the Trade descriptions Ordinance). After investigated by the Customs and Excise Department, 2 male and 1 female were under arrested from to company.

Reminders from Design Information Centre:
  1. Where one looking for a interior design company, One shall be careful and do more researches.
  2. Companies with quality shall be chose. Never choose a low-priced company with bad reputation, incurring greater loss.
  3. Owners should request the company to list every item of expenses before starting the work. If anything is over budget, price should be quoted first. Never choose an option because of low price as there may be so many extra hidden costs that may be over budget.
  4. Before the work start, the contract terms and the promises of services should be realized. Also a concrete and clear agreement should be drafted to confirm the work items and expenses and specify the way of payment and procedures. Contract is signed into with the consent of both parties.
  5. Any goods you found is far from your expectation, it is necessary to claim from related company, take photos as backup may get easier to claim for future, protect your own rights and benefits.
  6. One shall request the company for correct and clear products content, such as materials, date of completion, the responsibility bore and so on.
  7. Before choosing a renovation company, one should realize the structure and ability of a company, for example, if the company provides regular staff training, the resume and the strength of designers and how professional are the renovation workers, and employ a large-scaled, well-known and experienced company. Also, companies should be accredited the ISO International Certification, such as Quality Management System ISO 9001:2008, Environmental Management System ISO 14001:2004 and Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series OHSAS 18001:2007. The production designs are censored strictly to evaluate the feasibility and security of the designs and ensure the work procedures match with the designs. To protect environment, the natural environment, anti-pollution and the need of both society and economy are regarded as the basis, also the impact of operation, products and services on environment are effectively controlled. All of their renovation workers need to go undergo professional trainings and work by the ISO standard.
  8. For payments, companies offering interest-free installment will be preferable since such companies have to be strictly examined by banks, including their financial situation, and are more reliable.
  9. Also it is suggested that where choosing a renovation company, past works should often be checked as references, even better if any high satisfaction of customers.
Design Information Centre has already registered as minor works contractor, named Smart Will Engineering Limited, with the registered number, MWC 4320/2011 in Buildings Department to carryout related renovation and minor works.
To avoid any argument and misunderstood in future, be sure that asking all details clearly before renovation begin!
