Does not take the Sunday off for engagement ring, Worker falls to his death

A hardworking painting crew worker, instead of taking the Sunday off, returned to work on the building located on Wong Chuk Yeung Street. It is suspected that he slipped while painting the exterior walls on the 17th floor and fell down to the platform on the 7th floor. Because of the working platform’s narrowness, firefighters used approximately two hours to rescue the worker; however he was declared dead after, leaving his wife and daughter behind. His wife promised him that she will raise their daughter well when mourning.
The worker named Chun Ming Chan (age 35) who lived with his 38 year old wife and 3 and a half year old daughter in a subdivided unit. His wife stated that she does not regret living a hard life with him. She says “We were so poor to that point we needed to pawn our wedding ring; at that point, he promised me that he would buy the ring back for me.” Although her husband’s promise did not come true, her promise on raising their daughter will definitely come true.
Couple went through tough times, moved to a subdivided unit from a big unit
Chun Ming Chan (Ming) who had worked in the painting industry for more than ten years brought his two younger brothers into the industry as well. His father was heartbroken when he received the news of his son and reminded his other two sons: “Life is a priceless item, be aware of safety.”
According to source, Ming and his wife met in Mainland China and because of financial problems, they were not able to afford hosting a wedding ceremony, but his wife did not complain and she moved from a 2000 square feet house at Hubei to Shenzheng so that she can live with Ming. About two years ago, the family of three moved to a subdivided unit at Shum Shui Po. Due to the unstableness of Ming’s work, they had an income of about ten thousand dollars per month and after using a part of that for their daughter’s school fees, there was not much left; therefore, to prevent the household from having no money, Ming started to take more jobs. He started working on the building located on Wong Chuk Yeung Street nearly a month and a half ago. Yesterday was a Sunday, but Ming insisted to go to work. Yesterday morning, Ming fell from the 17th floor while renovating the exterior wall. At that time, he did wear a safety belt. He fell to the working platform on the 7th floor. Workers called the police after hearing a loud bang. The firefighters used nearly two hours to rescue Ming out due to the narrowness of the working platform. Ming was declared deceased when he was sent to the hospital. His family was heartbroken and sad when they went to the site to mourn. His wife promised to Ming that she will raise their daughter well.
- If the building is relatively old, the contractor is responsible for checking whether the walls have enough support for angle brackets.
- Never work alone on exterior walls as there will be no one to call for help when anything happens.
- Worker must always follow all safety rules to prevent any accidents.
- Anchor bolts must be used for installation of an angle bracket.
- Must always use a qualified safety belt when working on exterior walls.
- Purchase of third person liability insurance is recommended for owners because if accidents do occur, the responsible will be deemed on the owner first. Therefore, to protect one owns benefit and also the workers, it is a must to purchase third party liability insurance.
