Fell from midair when transporting, Steel Pipe kills worker

A 48 year old responsible dad, Liang Bin Kwok, was working on a building expansion project at Tai Po Water Treatment Works yesterday morning. In the middle of working, steel pipes were transported by cranes, but suddenly the pipes loosened and fell from midair. Liang was unable to escape in time and a pipe struck him in the head resulting to death on the spot. Authorities are investigating whether the accident involves human negligence.
The scene is a building expansion site inside Tai Po Water Treatment Works and boring was being conducted at the time of accident. Yesterday morning at approximately 8am, Liang was responsible for securing the loose screw on the steel pipe which was impacted in the ground and after pass the pipe to the crane to transport away.
Before accident, promised his son to select secondary school
According to updated information, just when the pipes were being transported by the crane, they suddenly fell and Liang was unable to escape in time resulting to death from being struck in the head. Workers saw Liang on the floor and contact the police. Unfortunately, when the ambulance came, Liang was already dead. After the accident, workers mourned for him on the site and family is deeply saddened after learning about what had happened.
It is reported that Liang and his 45 year old wife lives in a flat in Yau Tong with a 23 and 11 year old son. Liang’s parents are living in the Mainland; therefore, in order for Liang to support his parents and family, he worked really hard. In August, he was sent to work at the site of accident with a wage of $1000 per day. As a responsible and loving father, Liang promised his son who is in grade 6 that he would go select secondary schools with him. But after the accident, Liang and his son are forever separated and the task rests on the eldest son.
Mr. Chan, chairman of Hong Kong Professional Hoisting Engineering Association, states that signals are to be used when a crane is being operated and that workers can leave the area to prevent any accidents if anything falls from the crane. Mr. Lo, engineer in Department of Mechanical Engineering of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, states that a normal safety helmet can only withstand a force of approximately 150 pounds. A force of 800 pounds from a heavy hard material can cause immediate death; therefore, workers should leave the area to ensure safety.
- Workers must prepare enough safety equipment to ensure personal safety. If needed, use eye and hearing protection.
- Wear a safety helmet at all times inside a construction site. Moreover, only trained and experienced persons can enter the site.
- Usage of alcohol and drugs are prohibited during work.
- Machinery inside the site must be checked and repaired regularly to prevent accidents during usage.
- Always be alert while on the construction site as any sudden accidents can result to death.
