Wife dies from falling using a stool to hang clothes

An accident happened at Po Kan House, Po Lam Estate at Tseung Kwan O. A woman in her sixties is suspected to have fallen off from hanging clothes in the kitchen while standing on a stool. She fell from the window, fell onto the canopy and resulted In instant death. Her husband was told that his wife is dead when the police came to the flat for investigation. Police found a pile of wet clothes and a stool in the kitchen and believes that the woman must have lost her balance when hanging clothes.
The site is a flat on the tenth floor at Po Kan House, Po Lam Estate at Tseung Kwan O. The owner is a 63 year old man living with a 59 year old wife and a daughter for many years. The daughter has moved out recently leaving her parents in the flat.
At around 6am, residents heard a loud sound, looked outside and saw a woman in a pool of blood lying on the canopy. They informed the security and called the police. The ambulance came and announced the woman was dead. The police was in charge of investigation. The police went to every flat for questioning and confirmed that she fell from the tenth floor.
Male owner unwell from devastation
The husband knew his wife was dead after the police went his flat for questioning. He was devastated and unwell. The police arranged him for a checkup at the hospital but was declined. He then furthered investigated by the police.
During the investigation, a pile of wet clothes, hanger and a stool was found in the kitchen. The window was open. In the early stages, police have not denied the possibility of the woman to have fallen due to loss of support. The body was sent for investigation. From the site, a clothing rack is installed outside the kitchen window in Po Lam Estate for residents to hang their clothes. The flat of the accident did not have a metal clothing rack installed but only have a string operated clothing rack. The senior in the building states that they would rather hang their clothes on the balcony or hang it in the hallway to prevent any accidents.
As these types of accidents occur often, the housing authority has started installing a safe metal clothing rack for building over forty years old for free.
- Ensure you have enough support if you have to hang the clothing items outside. Have something for support and refrain from stretching the entire upper body outside the window.
- Do not uninstall the window grille for the convenience of retrieving clothing item. It is very easy to lose support when you have nothing to hold onto.
- If the hanger is bent, not as strong as it used to or loose then it’s a sign that it requires to be replaced to prevent any potential danger.
- Ensure you have enough support if you have to hang the clothing items outside. Have something for support and refrain from stretching the entire upper body outside the window.
- The clothing rack will deteriorate through time and will not hold as must support; therefore, not suitable for using it for support.
- Civilians are to advised to hired a registered and qualifying professional to conduct any repairs and replacements
