Construction worker fails to finish work and blackmails, Police does not care about dispute

Minor Works Control System has been fully in effect since 31 December in 2010. According to the Building ( Minor Works) Regulation, If owners hire unregistered contractors to perform the 126 items of building works included in Minor Works Control System, owners may incur liability. Besides, owners may also be charged and bear any possible damages if any accidents arise. It is never worth doing so and hence choosing a registered contractor would just be your best choice.

Construction workers look for potential business the internet forum; however when they receive the money, the work ends up not completed and instead demand more money. Our reporter contacted three victims; they paid amounts ranging from $120,000HKD to $230,000HKD, $500,000HKD in total. The victims called for the police many times, but the police listed as a personal dispute and declined to take any action. The victims were not happy with how they treated the case allowing the construction workers to harm the public.

Points to be caution :
  1. Property owners are susceptible to a fine up to $100,000HKD when they hire non-licensed contractors and non-licensed contractors may be subjected to imprisonment of 18 months and a fine up to $500,000HKD.
  2. Consumers should research information about the interior design companies beforehand. Even if its friend recommendation, consumer should go to the branches and understand how they work.
  3. When choosing an interior design company, the clients should understand the company's reputation and consider those who have met worldwide standard.
  4. Clients should acknowledge all terms and conditions on the contract. If there's anything unclear, the client should request the company for clarification.
  5. Customer should request quotations from contractors first and list in detail about the terms and conditions of the renovation. Remember to agree on the price before paying and signing the contract.
  6. Owners should carefully keep every contract, agreement, receipt, and design plans. If a interior design company does go out of business, consumers should contact the police immediately and professional help if needed.
  7. If the interior design company hires other companies to do the construction, the quality of work may not be guaranteed.
