Full Utilization of High Ceiling, Flat Transformation with $240,000, 2 Rooms for 5 People

THE REACH located in Yuen Long, which is developed by Henderson Land Development and New World Development cooperatively, started being handed over at the end of last year, when the owners Mr. & Mrs. Lam purchased a 2-room flat on the lower floor of tower 11 in the Reach, they originally aimed for investment use, the Lam’s couple moved from the urban to Yuen Long before the handover, and became more and more fond of that district environment, plus, their son’s allergic rhinitis was better than before, so they decided to live in the flat after the handover. However, the saleable area of the flat is only 400 sq.ft, it is quite crowded for a family of 4 and a housemaid to live in. if the space is equally distributed, every one owns less than 100 sq.ft. So the owners have to adjust the space in home design, so as to utilize every inch of the interior space.

A Cockloft Increases Sleeping Area

The interior designer Kevin Chan pointed out that since the ceiling height of the flat is about 3.15 metre, the owners wish to build a cockloft as their son’s sleeping area. Besides, it is inevitable that there are plenty of furniture and stuff in a home, the owners hope to have enough storage space.

Kevin plans to construct a cockloft at the hallway of the living area above the washroom. He stated that no matter the cockloft was use for stuff storage or a sleeping area, its safeness and weight capacity are important. He said that the humidity, light and ventilation inside the cockloft should also be considered. Hence, if an owner wants to construct a cockloft, he/she has to consult a professional, and it should be legal.

The staircase of the cockloft extends from the entrance to the living room, a hanging staircase is designed to reduce the sense of oppression. Kevin pointed out that the staircase was like a shelf, with 2 functions in 1 design.

Wooden Platform Increases Storage Space

High-rise development is not enough in space distribution, the surface area has to be fully utilized too. A 2-tier wooden platform is built in the living room to increase storage space, a small sofa is placed on the platform to reduce the sense of oppression. Kevin put the shoe cabinet and cabinet in the dining room, a fish jar, a folding table and dining chairs can be put in the cabinet to extend the visual spaciousness.

There is also a wooden platform in the master room, the room design is simplistic with light colour as the major tone, creating a comfy environment. The owners’ daughter and the housemaid live in the same room, pink can create an energetic atmosphere, and there is no adjustment in the washroom and kitchen.
