Born in a cosmopolitan city and live in place with hustle and bustle environment, one would like to find a peaceful place to rest one’s mind. “Home” is exactly a refuge to catch one’s breath. Let us introduce an elegant home designed by Design Information Centre Designers for an independent lady.

To meet the female owner’s requirement to have an industrial theme on her 200 square feet apartment, so the cement-colored TV back wall and black iron spotlights are used to coordinate harmoniously with the wooden floor tiles and zebrawood closet-display cabinet combo.

The design is located at Shatin Shui Chuen O Estate of area more than 200 square feet. Designers said: “With a square and open layout, and a ceiling height of about 8 feet, this apartment has an advantage of being spacious for flexible planning and convenient furniture arrangement. The only shortcoming is that the window is located on one side to generate an uneven indoor light source and insufficient natural light illumination. In view of this, we have paid special attention to light arrangement while planning the living room and bedroom by primarily using a black iron framed wire glass door.”

To satisfy the female owner’s preference on industrial style, so the designers have created a primitive comfortable space in gray and brown colors to match with a black iron framed wire glass door, black iron spotlights, etc.

The high zebrawood cabinet with a black iron framed glass door is able to give a cold and warm harmonious effect, and it also allows the owner to display her favorite commodities.

As the original living room was lack of light, so the designers have installed a lot of indirect illumination elements, such as spotlights and infiltration light trough on the ceiling in front of the TV and the zebrawood display cabinet, respectively.

To keep a balance of space limitation and meet the female owner’s need for plentiful of storage space, the designers have built a floor platform for the bed equipped with a flip-up locker.

Design details:

1. Material applications: Upon entering the door, on the left is the living room, behind the living room is a semi-open bedroom, and right ahead of the front door is the bathroom and kitchen. The designer has put a lot of effort in the apartment. To cope with the female owner’s preference on industrial style, the TV back wall has deliberately emphasized in cement color and black iron spotlights to coordinate with the South American sandalwood floor tiles, wood grain-finished AV cabinet and high zebrawood closet-display cabinet combo to create a harmonious cold and warm feeling, as well as a comfortable industrial flavor.

2. Lighting fixtures: As the apartment’s window is located on one side, the layout has caused uneven light source, in particularly in the living room. In view of this, the designers have installed lighting system at different locations, such as black iron spotlights on the ceiling for the TV and dresser, infiltration light trough on top of the high zebrawood locket-display cabinet combo, and infiltrating light within the stairs of floor platform. These have cleverly replenished the home with an ample light source.

3. Perfect coordination: To create a harmonious and impressive layout on a 200-square foot home, the designers have used materials and colors to connect and coordinate with the space of all areas. They include a zebrawood closet-display cabinet combo and a wardrobe on the living room and bedroom, respectively; black iron spotlights and a black iron framed wire glass door behind the dresser in the living room; wood grain floor tiles in the living room; and wood grain-finished floor platform in the bedroom.

4. Semi-open planning: As the semi-open layout and window are located on one side, and to avoid the solid wall from blocking the light to result in insufficient light in the living room, the designers have used a black iron framed wire glass door to separate the living room and bedroom. This has not only allowed the light to brighten the living room from the bedroom, but also separate the attributes of two areas. More importantly, the view from the living room can be extended whenever the door is opened.

5. Floor platform: To meet the female owner’s requirement for ample storage space in a limited area, the designers have made a tall wardrobe in the bedroom, a high closet-display cabinet combo on one of the walls in the living room where a space has deliberately been reserved on atop to install with a infiltration light trough to make a balance between space and storage capacity. On the other hand, the platform has been raised about 16 inches to accommodate a lift-up locker to cleverly conceal the storage compartment.

6. Curtain bar: The presence of a 4.5-foot bed, a high wardrobe and a desk has made the bedroom’s activity space to be relatively small. So the designers have adopted a sight illusion concept to disperse the attention of the resident or visitors by decorating the curtain with a crossbar in the bedroom to successfully create an interesting illusion of a wider horizon and bigger space.

7. Changing the bathroom door position: As the original bathroom door was wider, it prevented an effective utilization of bathroom space. The designers have thus removed the old door and replaced it with a new one in a new position to make more practical use of space. It is worth mentioning that a custom-made bathtub is built along with a gray glass partition. This bathtub has deliberated been elevated and separated by a stone tile fence of similar height as of the female owner. The purpose is to cope with her habit of washing hair in the morning without letting her body to get wet.

As there were no clear differences between the living room and bedroom, and there was insufficient light in the living room, the designers have thus used a black iron framed wire glass door to separate the living room and bedroom.

Despite closing the black iron framed wire glass door, the living room and bedroom are not obstructed by light, and yet they are two individual areas.

The designers have decorated the curtain in the bedroom with a crossbar to successfully create an illusion of wider horizon and bigger space.

The black iron framed wire glass door in checker design is able to match with the zebrawood wardrobe with natural wood grain to generate a wide view together.

To highlight the black and gray industrial design, the kitchen features a wood grain veneer kitchen cabinet and a durable kitchen table with a black granite tabletop.

After removing the original bathroom door and replaced with new one with reasonable width, the bathroom has become more practical to use. It is also constructed with a bathtub with a gray glass partition, toilet bowl, and a wash basin-locker combo.

The bathroom walls are paved with natural stone tiles to create an enjoyable bathroom with natural element.

Design tips

The cabinet-dining table combo is both esthetic and space saving

After taking a closer look of the entire house, you would easily discover that the living room is short of a dining table. Due to space limitation, the living room is hardly able to accommodate a dining table as it has already being occupied by a leather dresser and a high closet-display cabinet combo. Understanding this problem, the designers have constructed a dining table with collapsible legs hidden within the closet-display cabinet combo with a flip-up cabinet door. This has met the owner’s requirement to lift up the cabinet door to reveal the dining table while dining, and fold down the dining table to restore the original cabinet door if it is not used for dining.
