A family’s home base needs to lend itself to the passions of the family. Not only does the overall atmosphere needs to be consistent, but each family member’s own style needs to be incorporated. Combining all these aspects without clashing the design elements is certainly a challenge. Here we present a design case, where a family of six each has their own style. Not only does the house need to have a background European flavor to it, each person’s style needs to seamlessly blend into the background in a harmonious way.

Using European styling as the main theme with white and wooden furniture, the guest dining hall is given a classy low profile presence.

Situated in the Green Crest complex in Yuen Long, the 1495 square feet two storey house, perfectly fits the family of six with its large amount of space and privacy. The client is passionate of European styles, but doesn’t want to be too bold. As such, the designer chose to use white and wooden trims as a base, creating a clean and simple European home.

Changing the layout to create additional bedrooms

In order to add an extra bedroom to accommodate the children, the basic layout of the house needs to be changed, morphing the originally 3 bedroom unit into a 4 bedroom unit.

Using the client’s favourite European styling, the designer created a classy guest dining area. By using a mixture of white and wooden furniture, this classic style is further exemplified. The client also requested there be a large amount of storage space, in order to accommodate the belongings of six family members. As such, the designer integrated a shelf behind the living room sofa, neatly blending in with the furniture.

In order to create a bright atmosphere, the designer installed many different forms of lighting around the house. In particular, one of these lights even incorporated an element of Feng Shui, both stylish and practical. The dining room also uses a similar theme. Using a large white dining table, coupled with matching chairs, a low profile harmonious feel is depicted.

The washrooms use a simple design. Using wooden and white hints, coupled with hidden lights in the mirror, the designer creates a bright atmosphere.

In the dining room, a large lotus painting is hung. Although it creates a contrast with the furniture, it still blends in nicely. Making good use of the space, the designer separates the guest dining area and the kitchen with a mini-bar.

By the corner of the second floor stairs, lies the room of the eldest daughter, leaving plenty of room for a luxurious make up station.

1. As the family needs a large amount of storage space, the corner of the second floor stairs also doubles as a storage space for all the eldest daughter’s make up.

1. Using glass windows in the white open kitchen, not only gives a more spacious feeling, but also prevents all the smoke from escaping into the dining area.

The living room and the kitchen area are separated by a small mini-bar. This houses the main fridge, which can easily be accessed from both the bar and the kitchen area, thus saving space.

The designer converted the original kitchen area into the son’s own bedroom, and in turn relocating the kitchen to the side of the living room, utilizing each and every inch of the unit.

Each and every room in the unit is unique to suit the tastes of each occupant. The son wanted a simple and modern style to his room, thus the designer made use of grey metropolitan patterned wallpaper, creating the son’s beloved clean look.

The make up station

On the second floor, is the master bedroom and the 3 daughters’ bedrooms. What’s unique about this floor is the makeup station situated next to the stairs. As the eldest daughter works in the makeup industry, a lot of storage and practice space will be needed. As such, the designer specifically designed this area to suit her needs.

All three bedrooms utilize simple European styling. The master bedroom is very prestigious, using light blue and white colours to create a relaxing peaceful atmosphere, perfect for sleeping. To create storage space, the designer added a large closet at the end of the bed, allowing for storage of large amounts of clothing.

The eldest daughter’s room uses green and white as a main background, both simple and playful. The design is compliant with every family member’s styling. The client’s twin daughters share a room, as such every object in the room will have to come in pairs. The designer uses sky blue as the main colour to decorate this room, depicting their children’s youth.

Little has been done to the garden, with the exception of an instalment of a parasol, providing the necessary shelter to the family.

1. In order to meet the client’s needs of a large storage space, the designer added a row of large white closets at the end of the bed in the master bedroom, giving an abundant storage space.

The master bedroom is styled in a simple European fashion, with light blue and white colours to create a warm atmosphere. To blend in, the ensuite bathroom door also makes good use of white.

1. The original kitchen area has now been reformatted into the son’s bedroom. In line with his simple and modern tastes, ash grey was chosen as the base colour.

1. The son’s bedroom even has quite a number of small storage cabinets, conveniently tucking away all his favourite clothes and toys.

1. In the twins’ room, sky blue matched with shades of pink were used to match their innocent youth.

1. The eldest daughter’s room is similarly designed as the son’s room, but instead of grey, green was applied giving a sense of femininity.
